Aaron Brien:

Coming in clear on your end.

Shandin Pete:

Yeah. It sounds really nice.

Aaron Brien:

But yeah, it's the it's the man. Oh man, I still got it.

Shandin Pete:

Do you ever set up the arm?

Aaron Brien:

No, I've only had internet for like, four days.

Salisha Old Bull:

The arm is a broken arm.

Shandin Pete:

Oh

Aaron Brien:

arms, the broken arms. The busted arm.

Shandin Pete:

Yeah, just for just for just for technical clarification the arm has nothing to do with the Internet. It's simply a device to hold the microphone.

Aaron Brien:

Yep, I've never recorded a podcast in my apartment.

Shandin Pete:

I stand corrected. Okay.

Aaron Brien:

been put in hotels across this land, which I was in last night. I just got here. I just got here like yes, that's 776 30

Shandin Pete:

years ago.

Aaron Brien:

Yeah, I leave in the morning. Yeah, I go to four texts tomorrow.

Shandin Pete:

Road. Road life. Row add. Row Add Row. You're on the road life. I seen your one of your recent stories. And I was gonna comment about it. Because the thing that you showed that you were eating was pretty high in sodium.

Aaron Brien:

Oh, yeah. Big time. That's I mean, that's a pizza

Shandin Pete:

and. And a tube of Pringles. That's sodium friend. Now you are you have you achieved 40 You're over 40 now. Yeah, I

Aaron Brien:

don't know where you're going with this.

Shandin Pete:

Well, I'm concerned about your health. That's where I'm going. Well, you can

Aaron Brien:

shove your concerns in

Shandin Pete:

I can only imagine the swelling in your ankles in all that driving along with along with the tube of Pringles and the pepperoni pizza

Aaron Brien:

I gotta get I gotta get the proper all right there. And I think

Shandin Pete:

I think even had a sprite in the picture. Was that a sprite in the picture?

Aaron Brien:

who drink Sprite? Guys I'm not a Mormon.

Shandin Pete:

Oh my God come on. Anyway, I was concerned I typed the response by that now. You don't need to hear that from me the

Aaron Brien:

fact that you said I typed up a response to it was it was gonna be oh my god so crazy.

Shandin Pete:

It was becoming far too medical of a response I deleted as I know it's not

Aaron Brien:

shocking that you would even think that way.

Shandin Pete:

I should have sent you a link to what is it? Med md.com

Salisha Old Bull:

Yeah, it would be like why are my fingers purple?

Shandin Pete:

why don't my cowboy boots fit no more?

Aaron Brien:

Why don't he That's dumb.

Shandin Pete:

I don't know that's not dumb. Well, okay. This is we're gonna do first I want you to listen to the song because this is a unique song. Apart from the ones we've been listening to that I want to talk about this thing you just mentioned. Why don't he right? Okay that's what he's okay. Let's do it.

Aaron Brien:

Yeah, yeah, I can see this is gonna be a banger of a podcast.

Shandin Pete:

Why why why? What's what's going on?

Aaron Brien:

Read up randomly mentioned Dances with Wolves reference. You like I'm going with that? We're gonna go

Shandin Pete:

listen to this first. Have you listened to this and then see if you can tell. What What's the purpose of this song? Here we go. Get a good hair. And a good listen to hear the beat. hear the bells in the background. Yeah. Bells in the background something something rattling in the back. Okay kind of gives you that, like a little bit of a robot. Yeah. Throw some robot moves in there. Okay. What do you think?

Aaron Brien:

Does it have something to do with the Warriors tradition?

Shandin Pete:

You know what? I don't know. I don't know. This comes from the same real that I've been pulling tracks off of for the last, I don't know 12 episodes and we've had various interpretations. This is off the same reel.

Aaron Brien:

It almost kind of sounds like a hand game song to

Shandin Pete:

Yeah it does. It does. It's definitely not. It doesn't sound like a warden song.

Aaron Brien:

No, it's not like an old dance too. It's like not kind of has that like some of them like warriors homecoming songs kind of sound Yeah, you guys are self scalped dance. Yeah.

Shandin Pete:

Yeah. Yeah. That was a thought as well.

Aaron Brien:

Yeah. It's of the same stylization.

Shandin Pete:

stylization.

Aaron Brien:

You're welcome. There's,

Shandin Pete:

um, I'll put a link in the show notes. Definition to that somewhere. stylization? I don't know. But there's there's a handful of the songs on this some on this particular reel and I don't know. I don't know what to think. I wish I knew. Maybe one day anyway. Anyway,

Aaron Brien:

what made me sad.

Shandin Pete:

Like I said, send up. We might see him one day.

Aaron Brien:

Again, again,

Shandin Pete:

oh Aragog. Remember that when he's memorializing the spider that died? Like, should I say something? Yeah, go ahead. Oh, era God. What

Aaron Brien:

about the Big Lebowski? Who didn't do it? The ashes and he's like, we lost Donnie. Like we did so many fine young men that he'll 57 257 Saigon. Like, what do you do?

Shandin Pete:

I don't remember that part. Sounds funny.

Aaron Brien:

Donnie dies and they cremate him. And they go to the beach to throw his ashes on the beach but they're facing the winter. Lady gives a little talk. Talk about donde hijacks in Vietnam. Yeah. Donny?

Shandin Pete:

Okay. I got it. Yeah, I remember that. Now. I've heard the the ash is blowing in the face part. Yeah. That brought brought the memory back. Well, cool, man. That's awesome. I love the reference. The Big Lebowski I gotta watch that again. I haven't watched it in quite some time. But um yeah, I don't know man. I don't know what this is. That song is

Aaron Brien:

doing what we'll do. Here today.

Shandin Pete:

This is what I this is what I'm doing here today.

Aaron Brien:

This is what we're doing. Why don't you bring us together?

Shandin Pete:

I brought you all together here

Aaron Brien:

Chad WHAT DO WE Oh famous Miss Mrs. Bull Pete

Shandin Pete:

Yeah, we've got Felicia This is joining us because she wanted to chat about something important and you wish to

Aaron Brien:

be told her to

Shandin Pete:

I suppose there's a you blasted out a movie reference right at the beginning. Right. Alicia did say the show you did?

Aaron Brien:

I didn't know she said the bus dinner the broker that stuff. Oh, yeah.

Shandin Pete:

So you did. You did the bus in arm which is from what's the movie? Thunder heart. Thunder hurt. When did the stronghold London strongholds starring Val Kilmer and

Aaron Brien:

Red Deer table and y, z

Shandin Pete:

and Graham Greene and others and then eat without knowing it. Aaron also threw in reference movie reference in the native genre, and he said, Why don't they right?

Salisha Old Bull:

Yeah, yeah,

Shandin Pete:

I heard when he cut himself off because he said That's lame. Yeah, that's a reference to Dances with Wolves.

Aaron Brien:

Oh, I see. I know where we're going with this.

Shandin Pete:

Do you know do you really don't want Alright, so anyway, this is the thing. There's, um, there's this movie that apparently is and I'm quoting this article that says this movie is indeed different. And first, the end part is not part of the quote. That's me. First, there is no lasting in this movie, I broke the quote. There is no lasting not lasting means. There is no lasting and second there's no sidekicks or appropriation you know, what lasting is in reference to cinema in particular, native cinema you know, I've never heard it before it is term lasting. So I had to look it up. Okay, I had to look it up. So looked it up in another article references in referencing what is it called its first thing in lasting writing. In Indians out of existence in New England this was written in 2010 Apparently the phenomenon of a lasting is a rhetorical strategy that asserts as a fact the claim that Indians can never be modern got it lasting

Aaron Brien:

Yeah,

Shandin Pete:

how can we say that better phenomenon of lasting is a rhetorical strategy

Aaron Brien:

we don't we don't say it we just don't I don't know

Salisha Old Bull:

we are lasting

Shandin Pete:

we are we are lasting we've lasted

Salisha Old Bull:

well yeah, the last dragons

Aaron Brien:

Bruce Lee Roy

Shandin Pete:

Cooley's

Aaron Brien:

baddest man of the mall show no

Shandin Pete:

classic move out

Aaron Brien:

to talk a movie. Yeah, that's a movie.

Shandin Pete:

What's the name of it?

Aaron Brien:

This is called the last dragon is the last dragon Yeah, I

Shandin Pete:

think it's the last dragon Yeah,

Salisha Old Bull:

my gonna get you suckers

Aaron Brien:

anyway, you got the juice now shoddy

Shandin Pete:

man anyway, so last thing so apparently this movie that I'm talking about. doesn't employ this strategy of lasting no movie. We're talking about his prey. Prey you know the movie prey? Yep. out recently.

Aaron Brien:

And offshore like a year ago.

Shandin Pete:

Maybe a year and a half. I don't know. You're gonna have an off shoot of the of the 12 moons ago. moons ago. Yeah.

Aaron Brien:

The 13 XL. One day and

Shandin Pete:

the turtle the next hill.

Aaron Brien:

The that shit turtles back

Shandin Pete:

here that

Aaron Brien:

wolves, the wolves suckled from the conch sale of Earth.

Salisha Old Bull:

Coyotes on the golf course.

Aaron Brien:

And brother Fox with this young

Shandin Pete:

man keep going

Aaron Brien:

nursed upon the bosom of Mother Earth. In new moons, okay, as it is conception to birth.

Shandin Pete:

You're getting in there. Okay. all in there.

Aaron Brien:

Hey, why do you go medicine woman you

Shandin Pete:

remember? Oh, with the big old drum? Yeah. Grandmother drum. Yeah.

Salisha Old Bull:

I was thinking of indigenous work right?

Shandin Pete:

digitus to work? Oh, yeah. I don't know who that girl was or where she was up.

Salisha Old Bull:

Why'd you go?

Shandin Pete:

Anyway? Oh, okay, back to this. So yeah, apparently this movie doesn't employ the idea of lasting meaning that can never be modern. There's no indigenous sidekicks, but I don't know. You. You've all watched this show. Pray. You know, I got a course. I think any native watching a show about Indians is going to have just naturally a harsh critique, I think, maybe? I don't know. You tell me. What was your What was your sort of initial impressions of, of this? Show? solutia.

Salisha Old Bull:

I have to go first. Okay.

Shandin Pete:

Well, you're the guests. And you wanted to talk about this. So we're gonna,

Salisha Old Bull:

I thought it was cool that there was a girl that killed the predator. And that she was the warrior. And that was my first general impression. I thought it was I thought it was just cool that it was a girl that was the main person because I can't even really think of anything except for going back to the one that Aaron mentioned was stand with a fist. But she was she was adopted. She was adopted, you know, so

Shandin Pete:

stands with the fist. type or whatever. Yeah. Okay. All right. All right. All right. What's

Salisha Old Bull:

the word? What's the word antagonists? The main characters? Yeah. That was cool. That was her. Okay. Yeah. Well, it was also cool to see people or to recognize people. I think that's becoming more common

Shandin Pete:

actors or actresses

Salisha Old Bull:

do Yeah. Just like people that you see. Like, maybe you've seen them before they were in that movie, or maybe you see them around. And it's so funny, like, celebrities that are, are native or indigenous or whatever. It's not quite the same as seeing somebody who is not. It's like, still don't bother them or something. I don't know.

Shandin Pete:

Yeah. Yeah. The kind of change too and enough you notice the manner of their dress, the more popular they become. The more sort of eccentric their dress. The way they dress is. I don't know if you noticed that. I've noticed that.

Aaron Brien:

I can't take the hats anymore. The hats

Shandin Pete:

do you mean? What do you mean?

Aaron Brien:

You know what I mean? That you were gonna finish that because you're saying

Salisha Old Bull:

Where's your hat? Me

Aaron Brien:

might be my beard fell

Shandin Pete:

yeah he faded out of that.

Aaron Brien:

I don't have it. It's becoming it's it's replacing the ribbon skirt. And everyone knows how I feel about that.

Salisha Old Bull:

Well, you had this the last time

Shandin Pete:

we've had this conversation.

Aaron Brien:

Yeah. Anyway, we get you back on track. I'm gonna get back to this break because

Shandin Pete:

I want to know what Aaron thinks. And I'm gonna tell you what I think. Well, no, Aaron things so salacious. Oh, that's cool. It's got a female as the antagonist main character. Kills kills the predator. Nobody else could do it. She did it. Okay, go over. Danny. Glover. No, but he's not that he's one of the female Yeah, he Yeah. I mean, Arnold Schwarzenegger. Arnold Schwarzenegger killed well, nobody could do it in the film in the present film prey.

Aaron Brien:

Get the do the chopper.

Shandin Pete:

Ryan get to the

Aaron Brien:

champ hurry. Do it now who killed me I'm here

Shandin Pete:

do it now.

Aaron Brien:

What's the matter Mac? The CIA got you push it to which pencils Yeah, man. Yeah,

Shandin Pete:

those Yeah, that's the classic quote. Okay,

Aaron Brien:

so, okay tell you something. I watched him. I guess you better watch because I watched it

Shandin Pete:

from your memory.

Aaron Brien:

When I watched it. I went in thinking the same thing say leashes thinking like, Hey, Mikey, this is pretty cool man. It's a native chicken. She's from Montana like her bloodline. I don't think she grew up here. I'm not sure. Okay, it's from Fort Peck.

Shandin Pete:

None. Yeah.

Aaron Brien:

And, and I had the same thoughts. I was like, This is awesome. Finally, it's like something that's not cheesy. It's just gonna be predator shit. Right? So this is how I know the movie was good. Okay, it's because I forgot that she was native while I was watching the movie. Huh? Like it was just a good movie, you know? Yeah, I just, I'm a fan of the predators since I was a little kid, man. I love it. You know, I liked the references to the Danny Glover pistols. I liked. I mean, everything. Like I liked the predator thing. I wasn't a big fan of predator versus alien. So to me, to me, when I was watching it. It was it's the best Predator movie ever made. Wow. Okay. Yeah, that's what I think. And for me, it has nothing to do with the lady being Native. It had to do with the fact that the movie was done so well. And she was represented so well. That you didn't have to think about her character. So when you watch the native movies, you're right, we critique a lot. Yeah. But it's it's really easy to do because they give you so much ammunition to do it. Right. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. And so watching prey, you kind of forget, you just forget and you just enjoy it. So that's how I knew it was something a little different. I was like, Hey, man, this is cool. Then when it got done, you're like, this was just a good movie. Who had a female native lead, and it rocked the jukebox man. It was cool. It was cool. I liked it. Okay, do you get what I mean, though, like I do. I do. Or the whole time were you going? Oh my god. She's the native woman. Oh my god. She's so resilient. Oh my god. What are you doing that the whole time? Like I don't? I feel like I'm talking to I feel like I feel like I just shit on someone's birthday. And I don't like the way you guys are making me feel right.

Shandin Pete:

Now listen, what what happened? happened? Where'd you go? Down?

Aaron Brien:

There was no reaction to anything.

Shandin Pete:

Oh, well, no, I didn't know you're finished. You don't give that inflection point where you like, and that's all I got to say.

Aaron Brien:

You are not doing it. You are not a hey, you were not active listening.

Shandin Pete:

I was active listening. I know. I took some notes.

Aaron Brien:

You know you were doing you were doing things world.

Shandin Pete:

The DJ thing from Wayne's World? What's

Aaron Brien:

Mr. Scream? Do you know what I'm talking about? Ah ha ha ha ha let's go into Mr. Screen. Wayne was like Wayne is like I don't you're not listening to a word I'm saying with the microphone that's what you did to me. Just no, no, I

Shandin Pete:

was listening to

Aaron Brien:

your eight tracks ready and doing a show notes.

Shandin Pete:

I do. My kid my kid busted me doing that. Because I'll do all lose track of what's going on, you know? Uh huh. Oh, that's cool. Oh, really? Uh huh. That's cool. You know, you get into this kind of this pattern. You kind of know what he's saying but not really. Then he said and then he said Are you even listening?

Aaron Brien:

He busted you look at that scarf. She sold it. Is that a sticker or an air freshener? Sticker? Which American

Shandin Pete:

fridge magnet guards refrigerator magnet

Aaron Brien:

guards Algor from Aurora Garth

Salisha Old Bull:

Thank you. I was like if you're gonna spew spew in this

Aaron Brien:

tape give you a no street guarantee. You're gonna spew spewing this little tiny cup folded up? That's a movie we should talk about. Oh, we should. Okay. So I want you to think about what you're asking us to do right now. Oh,

Shandin Pete:

no, no, no. I'm thinking about it. I'm thinking about it.

Aaron Brien:

Or do you want to do your, your, your rent before? I

Shandin Pete:

know I want to say about it because I'm, I want to I want to know,

Aaron Brien:

we pride ourselves. We pride ourselves on this podcast and being cheese balls, right? Yeah, we don't I would say we do like, like, and I think people who listen to our podcasts are like, I love the way you guys talk to each other. Yeah, I like that. It's just two razors. Yeah. Acting like, chaos, right? Or whatever. Whatever it is. They say once in a while we say something articulate. And that's cool, right? Yeah. And I just want you to be aware that you're asking three native people. Okay, to talk about a movie a native movie. You you're straddling the fence, buddy. You're straddling the fence. You're borderline colonizer. You're playing with fire.

Shandin Pete:

You're borderline settler.

Aaron Brien:

Would you yourself? Shawn Dean Pete. From agency road in the Jaco Valley. Would you listen to a podcast? Where three natives are talking about a movie? A native movie?

Shandin Pete:

No. I wouldn't do it. I wouldn't do

Aaron Brien:

it. But we're gonna do it today.

Shandin Pete:

Well, this is the thing, man, because

Aaron Brien:

I don't know. I'm just I just don't I gotta be aware what my thinking is.

Shandin Pete:

I got some issues. I got some issues with the movie. They're small. But they seem they're small, but they seem like they could have been addressed with the type of consultation that they had on the movie. And maybe I just don't know, maybe maybe I'm just blind or unaware of some of the things. Here's the first one. I won't tell you the first one. All right. It's small and insignificant, but anyone who's sort of aware of I don't know the technology of that time. might agree. So the weapon she has right? It's this little hatchet. Right? Yeah. You remember that? Oh, it pans to various scenes of her using this hatchet. She uses the hatchet to just chopping up some roots or something on a on a on a on a rock. So she's got the hatchet in her hand and she's chopping up some roots. Yeah, on a rock. Now, what do you think this hatchet is made of? Rock? It's made of another kind of rock shirt. Obsidian. Who knows? But it has the look of that. Next Yeah. And you know, you know obsidian. You don't shirt.

Aaron Brien:

It has a it has a signature. Yeah. Trace obsidian.

Shandin Pete:

It's sharp. But it's brittle. Sharp but brittle. Correct. Yes. Well

Aaron Brien:

brittle. It's brittle. But it's it's not as tough as chert

Shandin Pete:

Okay, yeah. So if it was shirt, bit brittle, but yeah.

Aaron Brien:

Basalt is a lot stronger.

Shandin Pete:

Sure, sure. Sure. Sure, sure. Okay, so she's cutting this route, and then goes another scene where she's digging up a route with this hatchet. So, digging the route, then it goes to this next scene where she's going to try to hunt a deer with the hatchet. Like she's gonna wing it at a deer and kill the deer with this little hatchet now tell me am I off Am I off base yet? Does this sound like the grounded in the RIA in reality? I don't know. All right.

Aaron Brien:

Stop stop.

Shandin Pete:

I'm not done. I got the punchline. Okay, good. Okay, I'm stopping no no

Aaron Brien:

good. No you go ahead and finish this is

Shandin Pete:

the last one. Really? Not all those I can overlook I'm so yeah, whatever. Yeah, just attached to the hatchet and she made me She don't have a digging stick. And even in the movie, it kind of references that because her mom or her aunt or whoever sitting there is watching her cut up this route with the hatchet. And she's looking at her and she hands her a knife. She's like, come on Quick, quick cutting things with this little hatchet use the knife is a knife. She refused to use a knife. So she used the hatchet, whatever. So I get it up to that point. Then it goes to another scene where she sharpening the head hatchet. Now this is the part that bothered me. Now how do you think she's sharpening that hatchet?

Salisha Old Bull:

With Iraq? Yeah, metal.

Shandin Pete:

No, this is a shirt and or obsidian hatchet. And she's sharpening it as if it was a metal hatchet, you know, like a grinding stone is that it only is maybe just me. Is it just me but that seems like somebody sitting there saying that we don't sharpen obsidian like that.

Aaron Brien:

Okay, I'll give you that. Okay, is it more? That's crazy. I gave you that. I mean, Sean Bean. It's like, come on, lady. Are you? What are you doing here? Or is it more crazy? That it's a movie about aliens? I don't know. I mean, I don't know.

Shandin Pete:

Okay, all right. That's

Aaron Brien:

the part. That's the point. You're like, you know, I can't take this guy flying in the gods flying in with fishnet stockings and dreads. That's fine. I'm good with that.

Shandin Pete:

Well, there's no alien consultants to say, no, that's not what we don't wear fishnet stockings. But there is there is

Aaron Brien:

also no native. There's also no native consultants that have lived in a world where they're fighting aliens flying down. I mean, they I'm sorry. I'm sorry. She has an imaginary weird rope attached to her. Her hatchet and you're attacking that she's sharpening this

Shandin Pete:

that's another thing is the rope.

Aaron Brien:

Yeah, lives the dog is a whole thing. The dog lives. Argument your argument. I just can't she doesn't have a Rudiger or a mortar and pestle. That is efficient ground stone.

Salisha Old Bull:

Where's her?

Shandin Pete:

Well, it bothered me. It bothered me and I couldn't look past it. Okay, I'm sorry. I mean, I get the film. I get the theatrical content. It's great. Yeah, I was a good movie. I liked it. I enjoyed the fact that it was a non standard role. You know, usually it's the guy you know, the hero dude, but not in this case. Those are all cool, but couldn't look past the fact that Well, that's one thing I couldn't look past. But you know, I could put that away easy. And the other thing was she makes a rope out of like pine tree bark. Oh, I know Tim Ryan. But I don't think I don't think that's the adequate material. Strength wise. For rope that's going to pull you out of a Mudbug I just don't see that. I just can't and it's hard to look past those are two minor minor annoyances but here's the biggest one and this is the wow okay, this is another one. Here's another one. Unless you want to say more you want about aliens no good the dog anymore about the dog? No Alicia the dog or the alien got anything to add?

Salisha Old Bull:

Watching Aaron

Shandin Pete:

kind of angry

Salisha Old Bull:

and did this like diabolical lab

Shandin Pete:

that's all you're worried about anti gravity technology that you're not worried about that?

Aaron Brien:

Is he's like he's like that's not an accurate form of hatchet toolmaking in the middle archaic times. Nor is it accurate that this this went to the future. Yeah, then went back to the past. Then what somewhere and got a black powder pistol and then went back to the future past or whatever it is. Where this girl lives and then she gives the pistol or they she ends up with the pistol

Salisha Old Bull:

got the pistol? Pistol from the guy. Yeah. That was eating the orange medicine. The orange medicine. Yeah. And made her see through. She gets the pistol and the part that I don't get is The rest of the story is played out in ledger art.

Shandin Pete:

Or the MDN.

Salisha Old Bull:

Yeah, well, no, because then that pistol appears later in the 80s with Danny Glover. Did it make you but they give him back?

Aaron Brien:

The Oh give him back the pistol

Salisha Old Bull:

was even mean like they didn't like it yeah, but then that whole thing like how did they even get the pistol? How did they get in? That's the whole the ledger the ledger art.

Aaron Brien:

Okay, I'm okay. I'm okay with the pistol. I'm okay with invisible invisible plant medicine. And oh, yeah, that was you show me an inaccurate projectile point. Oh, cancel your

Salisha Old Bull:

Did you know Did you make it shirt arrowhead? Parents?

Aaron Brien:

Know we refer to them as projectiles? One it's not

Shandin Pete:

it's not necessarily to compare with the other fantasy. facetious Okay, all right. All right. facetiousness aside, you know you're right. Oh, this is 2023. All right. Well, and where have you? This was 2022. And we still have actors, indigenous actors mind you, which is what they ought to be. But they're still wearing fake feathers.

Aaron Brien:

Well, that's because it's illegal, man. They can't wear what can film

Shandin Pete:

it's illegal. You know?

Aaron Brien:

Where are they gonna get where they gonna get all these movie? eagle feathers? I don't think they're given out Eagle permits to Universal Studio. I don't I don't know. Well, I could be wrong. I'm waiting. area. Yes.

Shandin Pete:

That's this is another small annoyance that it doesn't mean nothing. But yeah, you know, everyone, everyone. When they look at a native film, and they see the feather that's all stiff and obviously painted. Obviously, Turkey. Yeah, we've gotten accustomed to that. But it just looks it just looks bad.

Aaron Brien:

Are you are you applying the Edward Curtis phenomenon to movie and save them to be native? They have to look a certain way. Maybe which tribe is she? Would if she's Abenaki? What if she's there against it? against it, or Nair gets it? Would if wouldn't choose? Stockbridge? Munsee Max tucket Peak Watts

Salisha Old Bull:

dinner Hi real feathers. They would be feathers of their own and probably have too much feather. We're like brothers from like, Mr. Jest or something?

Shandin Pete:

Yeah. Yeah. spangled gluud right to the tip. Maybe maybe like Hollywood.

Aaron Brien:

Maybe Hollywood has some weird like, seeing because it's a protected bird still, that they don't want to perpetuate something, you know? Right? I don't know. Yeah. But also, if we're going back that far, let's just let's just say this this movies set in like the 15 1400.

Shandin Pete:

No, no, it was just not that far back because there's French fur traders in there. Killing buffalo. So it's got to be at 16 It's got to be 1800s. It's got to be

Aaron Brien:

I don't know that she's not making a friggin hatchet out obsidian.

Shandin Pete:

Well, maybe it wasn't obsidian.

Aaron Brien:

We're well into the proto type with a proto proto contact. She's got metal. Okay.

Shandin Pete:

Well, I have to watch it again. I had to watch it again see, because it appears to be stone.

Aaron Brien:

We should have did a watch party where we watch it and talk like Mystery Science Theater five. We should have did that. Anyway, it's too long. I'm add it wouldn't I

Shandin Pete:

know it's almost two hours long. Okay, let me get to a big okay. Oh, good.

Aaron Brien:

Do the big reveal.

Shandin Pete:

I know it's it's another gripe of mine. Now. One of the one of the fun one of the one of the plots of the whole film is not not only the alien, but also that this young girl is trying to achieve This deed is trying to achieve this deed. And I can't remember what they call it in the film. But they remember she was trying to hunt something that hunted them. And this is early in the film. And they make it out like this. This mountain lion is like, is preying on humans. So it's like getting people from camp and dragging them off into the woods and eating them. That that's kind of far fetched and so so that so the response of the film is okay, in order to become the word chief, you go off and kill a lion bearing it back, then you become warchief. And that bothers me. And it didn't seem it didn't seem right. It didn't seem accurate. Now, now you can say well, you know this about this, the fishnet stopping Linna anti gravity spacecrafts, Lenovo device. Let's

Aaron Brien:

really look. Okay. Okay, I get what you're saying. It seems far fetched. Okay. So they missed. They missed the mark on some consultation. Yeah. Yeah. What's the movie about? It's about a chick, killing some predators, man. Yeah. Yeah. It's not Geo. There's no guy from Copenhagen gonna narrate over this.

Shandin Pete:

Okay, all right.

Aaron Brien:

I allow, I'm not, but also I'm not super sensitive. I'm also like, I just liked the fact that it's kind of a far fetched idea, because I think is delivered as a far fetched idea. I think if the movie was presented in a way where it was supposed to be accurate, and I'm gonna get flack for this on the next episode, okay. But that's, that, to me. That's what smoke signals is supposed to be this theatrical comedic version of the reservation. And the truth is, I don't like the movie, man. Okay. I don't like it. I don't like what it does. I don't like what it says, I, for sure. I respect the fact that it's all Indian cast. And, yeah, that it was paramount. But when, but if it was presented as something chaotic or kind of inaccurate, I did cool with it. But it was kind of portrayed as like, it's finally native people telling their story, you know, in a comedic way. And I was like, Yeah, I don't know, man. I had issues with it. Okay, we look at movie like thunder heart. Yeah. Thunder heart, to me is one of the best native movies ever made. Because I think it was designed to almost be like this crime Western mystery thing. It was presented to be that way. So it has some cheese in it. Yeah. Because that's how it's designed. And it's presented that way for you. Does that make sense? What I'm saying?

Shandin Pete:

Yeah, it does.

Aaron Brien:

So to me that prey was clearly presented to be this sci fi drama, like this adventure film. Yeah. So I didn't go into it. Me personally going into it looking for accuracies and what didn't they're looking for badass adventure, man.

Shandin Pete:

You got it, man. And I got it. Oh

Aaron Brien:

my god, I love I liked the movie a lot. I think it's the best Predator movie ever made. I really do. And I'm a fan of predator. I like to predator. Well, I'll say Alicia, we're close in age. So like that first Predator movie was like people loved it. Loved it. It was

Salisha Old Bull:

into it. I wasn't into it until this one came. And then I was into it. And then I had to go back and watch them all each one each one the predator got more advanced in each one. But there were like some things that were the same like that that the net tool how it like he throws them that and it like slices everything. Like that happened every time every time it was like you knew and then that came out or like oh, he's gotten that die Yeah, but he had been that since the 1800s. So good at it.

Aaron Brien:

In advance.

Salisha Old Bull:

We saw this. We saw the leg cut Oh tree stump in prayer. Okay

Aaron Brien:

1800s Who knows who's ever tried to remove a tree stump from from the yard or field? Little did you know all you needed was? Oh my gosh.

Shandin Pete:

Them roots run deep. They do.

Salisha Old Bull:

It was interesting how they had him tearing out basketball ones all the time

Shandin Pete:

during basketball. Oh, yeah, yeah. Ripping the backbone out. Yeah. Yeah. And he'd stare at him all strangely. Remember. He never seen it before. Yeah. Wow, look at that one.

Salisha Old Bull:

Yeah

Shandin Pete:

try it again. Clear, play the throat. Okay, go. Go.

Aaron Brien:

I can't do it. You

Shandin Pete:

can do it. I can do come on. One that kind of little gargle

Aaron Brien:

gargle thing I'm trying to do.

Salisha Old Bull:

You're gonna sound like the garage

Aaron Brien:

I think this is my, because I heard a lot of critiques about this movie. And I'm saying it's not as good as the original. But I think that's because people aren't nostalgic. So they're not looking at the film as the film. It was a cool idea, man. It was. It was a young chick that was killing predator. Yeah, that is right. Yeah. But the first one for sure. It's the most quotable of all the predators.

Shandin Pete:

Yeah. Yeah. It's gotta be

Aaron Brien:

happy so fun. I'm gonna have me some fun. I'm gonna have me some fun over that.

Shandin Pete:

Remember that last cut is coming up that hill. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, no

Aaron Brien:

remember the

Shandin Pete:

Oh yeah. Really? believes that his name on there Billy.

Aaron Brien:

It didn't egos egos believe in freedom. No, man.

Shandin Pete:

That a no man

Aaron Brien:

I thought you were in a freedom. Daddy. No, man

Shandin Pete:

that was 1987 Man.

Aaron Brien:

Dang, man. That's that's that's. That's life after Commando. So far.

Shandin Pete:

Yeah. Our man.

Aaron Brien:

Commando. Oh my god. Remember he goes into the army surplus store and still.

Shandin Pete:

That's like a dream. Oh, I want a bazooka. I want a

Aaron Brien:

grenade launcher was my jam. He goes in there and paints his face. Oh, yeah. puts it on his arms and then on the bicep.

Shandin Pete:

Yes, sweaty, sweaty bicep.

Aaron Brien:

He's popping off man.

Shandin Pete:

blow off some steam Bennett. Remember that?

Aaron Brien:

He has a cigar when he says that. Yeah, some steam minute, man. Then he finishes it off with Terminator. One classic white. suit. He was unstoppable. I can barely speak English. The guy could barely speak English. He was dude. He went from Conan. He went for freakin Conan to Terminator. Make bro.

Shandin Pete:

Okay, all right. Let's. Yeah, okay. This is the thing. All right. This is what I want to do next. Because yeah, I agree. Man Schwarzenegger films late 80s. Early 90s. That was it. Man. You can't beat it. You know, I showed some first year students a reference to Back to the Future and none of them knew it. Maybe one had seen the movie. That's how far off this generation is from these classics. You know? Why? You're a slacker just like your old man.

Aaron Brien:

Hello, McFly.

Shandin Pete:

Well, here's the thing. Here's 10 I'm gonna read you 10 indigenous films you need to watch it's a list off the internet from an undisclosed site. Number one, and tell me your rating. What should we do five stars. Four stars. Three.

Aaron Brien:

Let's do 1233 being the best.

Shandin Pete:

Well, there's 10 of them. I think

Aaron Brien:

there's still no we're just gonna do. We're not gonna You named a movie me and say Leisha say it's a three. It's a two. Okay, I gotta let our listeners do their own top 10

Shandin Pete:

You're on top 10 Yeah, Texas or email us. You're on top 10 Here we go. Number one, Powell highway 1989. Power highway. Three. Right. What's the one is the best three three

Aaron Brien:

is the best. Oh three. What? three threes than one bro.

Shandin Pete:

This is not a podium. This is not a pulley three

Aaron Brien:

thumbs up.

Shandin Pete:

Oh three thumbs.

Aaron Brien:

Nobody ever gets excited for one thumb up.

Salisha Old Bull:

Where do you get? Where do you get a third thumb? Where?

Aaron Brien:

Don't ask questions. You don't want to know the answers. It's because fives too much. 10s Ridiculous. Let's just do 123

Shandin Pete:

Okay. 1233 being good. It's not a podium. It's not a podium. It's thumbs up. Okay, Powell highway. Three, ma'am. Alicia Powell highway.

Salisha Old Bull:

I don't know. Three. I guess.

Shandin Pete:

You guess

Aaron Brien:

them. That was? That sounds

Shandin Pete:

like you're just selling out?

Salisha Old Bull:

Yeah, I'm like the two. You're the two. I think it was I don't know what the rest of them are.

Shandin Pete:

Oh, you can read any of them? 1123 Yeah, any? Good. Day two. What's the what's the codable from power highway?

Aaron Brien:

Let's go to Billings and Jason white women

Shandin Pete:

say that though? But I know what you're saying. More derogatory. No, I'm just kidding. solutia What's your quotable from?

Salisha Old Bull:

I can't remember but I just remember him looking at this car. Like it's a horse to be part running in the dust. Oh, yeah. Yeah,

Aaron Brien:

to me Paulo highway has more of those kinds of scenes than quotable things. It's like these weird little scenes like remember when he signed that song in the river?

Shandin Pete:

Oh, yeah. singing the song in the river naked

Aaron Brien:

because of mine, and he tries to catch the song so to begin with that's a good one. But

Shandin Pete:

my buddy read well, yeah. My favorite scene is that when he goes to visit his aunt is that his aunt? I think in the scene is perfect because that because the house rundown it's all them. You know? It's not it's not this. Well, it's studio. It's dim. You know? It smells like cigarettes. Oh, yeah. She's sitting on one of those chairs that kind of has that plastic vinyl on it. You know it's kind of cracked. Yeah, that's that's my best scene. Everyone's coming here looking for some good old fashioned inner wisdom. got none it's a good okay, that's that's movie one of 10 one of 10 Let's get through this

Aaron Brien:

list. We might not make they get

Shandin Pete:

this easy. Yeah, this isn't this is fun. This is the easy one. I think a quick rating will come out on this one. Dances with Wolves 1990 Dances with Wolves.

Aaron Brien:

Who I'll give it to who?

Shandin Pete:

Okay, yeah, I mean, but at the time put yourself in 1990 What would you three it's a three three. What do you read it now though? Honestly. Two one okay.

Salisha Old Bull:

Yeah, I still see the team

Shandin Pete:

okay 2321 Yeah, what what's your issue with it? Aaron was the deal

Aaron Brien:

No, I just saw see let's just chat.

Shandin Pete:

What was

Aaron Brien:

that need to be Shawn Dean close your door

Shandin Pete:

your door to knowledge there's a quote from that. There's Oh, no. Yeah,

Salisha Old Bull:

yeah. Don't hurt my new horse. Yeah, we

Shandin Pete:

already had a few of those. Come on. Don't hurt.

Aaron Brien:

Go watch. Yeah. Oh,

Shandin Pete:

oh, yeah. Yeah.

Salisha Old Bull:

Put that in your book.

Aaron Brien:

Why don't we write the most underrated comedic scene in In, in dances, wolves, it's not it's not supposed to be this funny, but if you watch the guy's face, man, it makes you laugh is when he's trying to scare him with that stick. Yes, it's like it's a snake. Kevin Costner is like looking right at him I laugh so hard when I see that. I don't think it's meant to be that funny, but she makes me laugh is

Shandin Pete:

a good one. It is good. Yeah. Okay, any other quotables on that one? That I mean, you have to watch it if you haven't watched that one. You should watch it right

Salisha Old Bull:

yeah, when you didn't want it anymore. I said, you don't want it anymore. You left it out there.

Shandin Pete:

I just my pants, and there's nothing nobody can do about it

Aaron Brien:

I just piss my pants, and there's nothing anyone can do about it. That's awesome.

Shandin Pete:

Okay, we're gonna go to the next one. This one's a bit now. This is the top 10 from a website so the last of them. The Last of the Mohicans. 1992 I don't know. cinematically

Aaron Brien:

it's I'll give it I'll give it a two but I honestly was never that into it. Yes. Song drove me fucking crazy. What song was it? That epic kind of balancing they play or whatever. And then the girl jumps off the cliff and then the guys like I get or another guy gets thrown off the clip. The girl can dang it not a big fan, man. Okay, the big fool.

Shandin Pete:

Well, wait, this. Is this the sound? Wait, let me show you real quick. Well, I think so.

Aaron Brien:

She's on it's ringtone.

Shandin Pete:

It's on my ringtone. No. Listen, this one you can hear it?

Aaron Brien:

Oh, damn. That's intense. Yeah, yeah. There it is. Oh, started looking around.

Shandin Pete:

Yeah. You got your black powder. Oh.

Aaron Brien:

Oh, my God. This run, run, run run

Shandin Pete:

is that the song you're talking about? Yeah. Okay, anyway.

Salisha Old Bull:

I'm gonna give it a one. I don't think I've ever had the patience to watch it. Okay. I looked at the picture. And I'm like, I can't watch

Aaron Brien:

that. Yeah, yeah, this falls in the same category to me as Robin Hood. And like, like those kinds of movies were just too long, man. They're too long. And it's like, I really wasn't that I actually don't even think of it as an Indian movie. When you say that. I never would have thought I wouldn't have put it in there. Go.

Shandin Pete:

Yeah, wouldn't either. Yeah, yeah. There's no quotables from that. There's not one I can think of. I can't or not one, not one. So the jig is not to do the jig.

Aaron Brien:

It's a big change driven movie.

Shandin Pete:

Jake driven. Okay, here's one we already talked about. smoke signals. 1998. smoke signals. You mentioned it, right. Yeah, I mean,

Aaron Brien:

I should correct myself. I'm gonna give it a two just because it is native. Everything Corsairs the whole thing, but it's not my personal style of okay, I'm just not intuitive. But definitely codable Yeah, Audible, but the most epic scene in the movie is the wig dude when he cuts his hair off. Did that like?

Shandin Pete:

Yes, exactly. Come on. Let's get some who can say some reality to consultants. Some of these things? Yeah. Okay, so Alicia smokes 9098

Salisha Old Bull:

I know probably two to two. I didn't know it was the kind of coordinate and I just remember when I came out. I was like, I don't know anybody who talks like that. Anybody I

Aaron Brien:

don't know anyone who drives the car backwards.

Salisha Old Bull:

Every time though, you have to coat the day is only 50 pieces of fabric.

Aaron Brien:

And she took two

Salisha Old Bull:

or two. Yeah.

Aaron Brien:

Probably one of the most quotable quoted parts of that movie is when he, when he was doing like his monologue about the Jesuits playing them in basketball.

Shandin Pete:

All right, yeah.

Aaron Brien:

I've actually heard that like, I've kind of heard that like in like, you know, people it's like, it's like a thing people like to do but probably the she toward and two thing is probably the most quotable deal.

Shandin Pete:

Yeah, I think so. Okay. All right. All right. Now, this next one, I don't know if I know how to pronounce it. And I don't I've never seen it before. I'm going to put it. I'm going to throw it in the chat. And see if somebody can pronounce it.

Salisha Old Bull:

fast runner. Oh, fast runner.

Aaron Brien:

Okay, yeah, these are just wicked. I love these. It's a good film. It's it's it's it's a serious movie though.

Shandin Pete:

Okay. It's not for the faint of heart.

Aaron Brien:

It's a serious it's drawn comedy drama. dark comedy. There's Well, I'm really funny part on there, though.

Shandin Pete:

You don't want to say it sounds. I think I've seen this now that you're mentioning it. I think like in the Arctic. Yeah. Oh, I know the scene you're talking about. You just have to watch it. I think I've seen we

Aaron Brien:

would see them

Shandin Pete:

sleeping. They're sleeping. Yeah. Yeah.

Aaron Brien:

chases? Yeah. Okay. Go next lightweight, so I guess

Shandin Pete:

I'll give it a three. Okay, so I've seen it. You give it a three. It's good. I don't seen it. I didn't see it. Now this one's a strange one. I don't I don't even this shouldn't even be on the list. I don't think Well, I don't know. When talkers.

Aaron Brien:

Oh, that's a garbage movie.

Salisha Old Bull:

Isn't that like a really old? Oh, no, not

Shandin Pete:

when walkers, not the old wind walkers. This is wind talkers. It's Nicolas Cage, Nicolas Cage. Beach, Navajo Code Talkers World War.

Aaron Brien:

It's a horrible movie. Even when they're shooting the the battleships or shooting onto the shore? It's like a whole different. It's like stock footage. Yeah. It's like not even it's I don't like the movie. I get a one. I don't know any quotes out of it other than when they're trying to come up with the name.

Salisha Old Bull:

That's not the one. That's my that's not the one with the emo it would do my flag, is it? No.

Aaron Brien:

No, that one's called IRA, isn't it?

Shandin Pete:

No, it is. One. Yeah.

Salisha Old Bull:

The same guy? Well, this is

Shandin Pete:

about the the code talkers based on the story of the Navajo Code Talkers during World War Two.

Salisha Old Bull:

Well, that's super inaccurate.

Shandin Pete:

Yeah. I don't know if it goes to the Iwo Jima

Salisha Old Bull:

thing. Is it the guy that does that he raises the flag?

Shandin Pete:

I don't think this is. Yeah. No.

Salisha Old Bull:

Movie on the movie? No,

Aaron Brien:

I don't think so. No,

Salisha Old Bull:

no, it's about the targets. Yeah. It

Aaron Brien:

was about the Navajo code talkers. South Pacific. Yeah,

Salisha Old Bull:

it's like it's like a one. But it's, it's good for the talkers, the code talkers.

Shandin Pete:

Okay, they could have done a better job. I think, like, I

Aaron Brien:

don't have Nicolas Cage.

Salisha Old Bull:

Or why did you have to have Nicolas Cage if it's supposed to be about the code talkers like shouldn't the code talkers be? Yes. Only was Nicolas Cage one of the code

Shandin Pete:

talkers.

Aaron Brien:

No. Okay. Let's move on. It's a garbage.

Salisha Old Bull:

He talks about numbers and another movie.

Shandin Pete:

Yeah, you find some national treasures do okay. Here's the next one. And then, oh, the business of fancy dancing 2002. The business of fancy dancing.

Aaron Brien:

It's a two. It's that same except it's a Corsairs movie, I think. Yeah. Yeah,

Shandin Pete:

I think so. Sherman Alexie? Yeah. For his book. I don't know this

Salisha Old Bull:

one. I didn't know it was a movie it

Aaron Brien:

didn't like, homosexual guy.

Shandin Pete:

Let's see interested in one let's see, when a successful spoken Indian poet returns to his Native American reservation for a fee. Enrile he grapples with his place in the community and reconnects with an old friend.

Aaron Brien:

That's finished it. Why didn't you finish it?

Shandin Pete:

I felt it was getting offensive, so I thought I'd better stop.

Aaron Brien:

Anyway, I don't know. I think that's it. Okay. I give I give it a two it was it's a decent film. I only watched it one time.

Salisha Old Bull:

How have you seen

Shandin Pete:

every movie? Yeah, no, this is probably more astounding. The new thing. I don't remember it. I don't remember it. No, quote.

Salisha Old Bull:

I never seen it. Yeah. Okay, here we go.

Shandin Pete:

Let's get this move on. Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee. 2007. This even

Aaron Brien:

beach.

Shandin Pete:

It's like a Western. Oh, wage. Oh, yeah. And the chief is the guy from Star Trek. No.

Aaron Brien:

Yeah. Yep. And they have it's really about Charles Charles Eastman. It's about Charles Eastman. Dark doctor, the doctor. It's not that it's not great, but it's a two. I give it a two. Okay, this is a horrible list. I'm gonna do a

Shandin Pete:

really horrible list. It is all you need to do.

Aaron Brien:

But keep going. I wonder if

Shandin Pete:

we're gonna get to the end of this one. This one I have never seen it. The song or songs my brothers taught me. Never heard of it. Never heard of it.

Salisha Old Bull:

Never. Like number one. Is this number one. No. And

Shandin Pete:

this is just going through 10 that you ought to watch. I was like it's getting worse is let's see set on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. This coming of age film delves into the bond between the Lakota Sioux brother and sister as they face the challenges of their surroundings.

Aaron Brien:

Never heard of it next heard of it next.

Shandin Pete:

Okay, Wind River. 2017. Wind River. All right. Rookie FBI agent teamed up with game tracker.

Aaron Brien:

I liked the part at the end or when he paints his face in his in his backyard. And that guy comes up and he's like, Why the hell are you? Why'd you pinch your face like that is? I don't know. I thought it was like the right thing to do or something. He says something funny. It's a tube. It's more of a crime kind of Yeah, I'm

Shandin Pete:

you know, I don't remember it. I don't remember it well enough to even.

Aaron Brien:

Yeah, talking to you guys. Is top fives ready, though? Because this is garbage.

Shandin Pete:

Next is that's it that we went through? 10 That's

Aaron Brien:

horrible. shitless

Shandin Pete:

This is on? Should I tell you where it comes from? Glad to know. This comes from powerhouse.com I knew you knew. Knew it. Yeah. There's probably better top 10 lists. I'm sure

Aaron Brien:

about this. Stop the recording. Let's do a couple minute break and make our list.

Shandin Pete:

I'm gonna make them a list. Okay, I'm gonna pause pause the recording come back positive.

Aaron Brien:

I've never thought of me neither. I'm not in this setting. You know?

Shandin Pete:

I'm gonna dig deep. I can only come up with three.

Aaron Brien:

I'm gonna smoke your ass.

Shandin Pete:

Well, let me think a bit longer. But this? Well, you will okay. No. I probably think of something while we're chatting. Okay, let's go through this. Top five. Top five. Not not in any particular order. Yep. And what I want you to do is tell me why. Tell me why. Okay, top five and one. Who wants to go first?

Aaron Brien:

Let's just do one each right here. What do you saw? Chandi. Yeah, Lisa. Okay.

Shandin Pete:

The one on my list. It I don't know. Yeah, it's kind of a native movie. Little Big Man.

Aaron Brien:

Little 50 years ago, 50 years ago this year.

Shandin Pete:

That's comedy. Yeah, I said native though isn't a native film

Salisha Old Bull:

been adopted native and there's lots of those.

Shandin Pete:

Yeah. And you can't beat the comedy of Chief Dan George net. I would

Aaron Brien:

say it's a native film. One of the most quotable lines in all of Indian Country is you can sleep in my Lodge.

Shandin Pete:

I think it captures Indian humors what I think yeah, just kind of our humor. Or sort of morbid. Yeah. Weird. Humor that people don't quite get sent. Oh

Aaron Brien:

man alive can match them on a horse.

Shandin Pete:

It's kind of offensive and funny. Growing gyms

Aaron Brien:

aren't a handsome was engines areas. No man can match them on a horse.

Shandin Pete:

Am I still among the living? Yes. Okay, go ahead. Whoever is next? I told you mine. And why go?

Salisha Old Bull:

That was mine. I'll do my next one. Okay, my next one. Next one. My next one is tender heart.

Shandin Pete:

Ooh, yes. Okay. He's in why he's in the can. He's in the can

Salisha Old Bull:

thresholds country heart

Aaron Brien:

tender heart is on my list. And one of the best lines is and he's, he's wearing what are those shoes he's wearing? Oh, yeah, whatever shoes and they're a little bit too snug, but he likes some cool. And he's like, he's got 15 cents or some little ones. Yeah,

Salisha Old Bull:

yeah. And the arms gonna be the bus that are

Shandin Pete:

Yeah.

Aaron Brien:

I liked that movie a lot, man. Yeah, I do. I think it's I think it's because it's it's a little dramatic and exaggerated. But I think that's what it was designed for. Yeah, I don't think it was designed to be like a documentary. It was it was designed to kind of be an exaggeration of the time, which is reflecting that seventh, the 1970s on the Pinery. Dresden, like, in a weird way. It's a fantasy. It's kind of this fantasy adventure. Like, where they overcome the bad guy, you know? And they convert the guy who works for the bad guy and he becomes part of them. You know what I mean? It's it's cool, dude. It's got some it's got some it's got John. John should out. What?

Shandin Pete:

Yeah, go? Yeah. Is Yeah, he's in the can. You had yourself vision? A man with vision. One with the Rolex and a brand new pair of shoes.

Aaron Brien:

You run with the ancestors that the need it's good. When you know what Paulo is like, it reminds me of those early like the 80s. And like, the brush arbors. And like, yeah, I always remember to me, I think fancy dancing is very different now. But in that movie, you got those?

Shandin Pete:

Yeah, moves. Yeah.

Aaron Brien:

Yeah. No. Yeah.

Shandin Pete:

That was that was on my list, too. Yeah,

Aaron Brien:

it's on my list. So. Yeah.

Shandin Pete:

So we're Yeah, we're aligning here. Okay, Aaron, your turn. Go.

Aaron Brien:

Man dance me outside. Yep, dance. To dance me outside man.

Shandin Pete:

Why Good shit. Why?

Aaron Brien:

Well actually think about think about this. I just thought about it. For one, it shows you for us native people. It shows us a whole different place that we don't know about which is eastern Canada. Oh, yeah. And yeah, and it still there's things we can relate to. And then how many Native people did you know growing up there was a crew and there was always one metalhead. Remember that? Like? Yeah, there was a metal head in there. And you're like a native Metal Head. And I'm like, no other. No other native film to me has a native Metal Head. And all of us know about the date of metal head. Yeah, this Yeah. With his hair out and then and then like, and then not to follow trends, but the whole MMI W thing. It's got some of that in there, man. Yeah, yeah. It's also got the relative that leaves the rest goes to the big city and kind of thinks she's bougie Yeah, man. She wants to be Reza again, right. Like, can you do that story's been written man. You know? I remember the part where the lady the old lady lists the cigarette thing. When it comes out all them cigarettes come out.

Shandin Pete:

I don't remember that. Well, remember watching her maybe once or twice do I Gotta watch it again. I guess what? Sorry. I remember that part. Yeah. Yeah.

Salisha Old Bull:

It's that movie because she goes away because she can't have a baby. But then she goes with her old snag, and then maybe by her old snake or something like this medicine does do this medicine like medicine is happening. To promote that's like every red guy is worst nightmare, right? woman went out to go do medicine to go get knocked up. Trapped.

Shandin Pete:

That never ends. Well, by the way, when he's in jail,

Aaron Brien:

he's in jail. Remember, they get an arrest and you're sitting there and so where do you live? Like I live where the sun meets this the land and where he goes off and starts saying all this stuff. And then the guy's like, wow, what cheating is like, his neighbor.

Shandin Pete:

I know I learned and I watched it a couple of times, and I just couldn't. I didn't think it was great. I'm sorry. I didn't I'm sorry. It wasn't it wasn't bad. It just wasn't good

Aaron Brien:

it was that's what we're doing.

Shandin Pete:

Bad All right, big man.

Aaron Brien:

You like Dustin Hoffman? So much go be with him.

Shandin Pete:

To get through this list, man. Okay. Okay. First, okay. Okay, next, we'll start back to top. My next one on my list. I don't know if any, I'll remember this. And I don't remember the whole of the whole movie. But there's a couple scenes that that make me say oh, yeah, this is reflecting something that seems real. Skins. Remember skins at

Aaron Brien:

skins are sleeping on skins. But Mogi yellow. Well, that's fine. Yeah.

Salisha Old Bull:

Skins was oh, no, I didn't like oh, no, no, it's still real. I like it. I liked it. You know, there's a part. There's a part. That's way too accurate. I was like, No, I can't. I can't

Shandin Pete:

wait. The week i Yeah. Yeah.

Aaron Brien:

Alicia, that when I first watched it, I thought, Oh, this whole let's watch ourselves thing.

Shandin Pete:

Yeah.

Aaron Brien:

I like a little bit of fake. You know, it was just it was a little too like, I mean, housing houses. They had the whole nine dude like it was. Yeah. Yeah, I agree with you. It was too real that the week scene was like, I didn't even know the fictional guy. And I was like, this is hard.

Salisha Old Bull:

That's a traumatic scene for me. Because every time now when I walk into this type of situation in real life, I think of that movie. Like backwards. Oh, do you think a movie every time you walk into that situation? Like no, I don't ever point

Aaron Brien:

this point. Because like when you go to the movies, or when you say hey, family's Movie Night, or you're with your significant other and you want to watch a movie? How real Do you want to

Shandin Pete:

escape? Escapism right.

Aaron Brien:

Away from what to watch, pray to watch stepbrothers. I wanna I don't want to watch my uncle die Christ Holy smokes. I've read that book before.

Salisha Old Bull:

But I would rather hear your story about the Fourth of July and how the baby got and save. Yes, yeah. Or Thomas or somebody's dad.

Aaron Brien:

If we could get smoke signals. Skins up here. Right here Oh, okay. You're almost there, buddy.

Shandin Pete:

Yeah, no, yeah. Making the list. All right. Oh, yeah, solution.

Salisha Old Bull:

Mine is last of the dogman Oh. You go into waterfall waterfall, and there's a tie in the waterfall behind

Aaron Brien:

thinking the same because

Shandin Pete:

I talked about this

Aaron Brien:

I liked that it's fantasy. I liked that it can't be real. I love it. I love the waterfall like

Shandin Pete:

I'm gonna erase this part of the podcast

Salisha Old Bull:

and this lady knows the language like what the hell?

Shandin Pete:

apologist right? Horrible. I'm gonna put a link in the show notes to all these movies so people that are listening can watch them. And at least know what we're laughing. Okay. All right.

Aaron Brien:

Last time. You had dance me outside on your list? Say Alicia. Yeah. And you had thunder hard on your list? Yeah. And you had lost a dog on your list.

Shandin Pete:

You guys list sir. converging. We're.

Aaron Brien:

We're covering.

Salisha Old Bull:

Let's see if we have the last one. Probably don't though.

Shandin Pete:

Wait, what? Let's see. Okay, what do you

Aaron Brien:

think you're gonna have? I don't think you're gonna have this one. Let's hear it. The education of little tree.

Shandin Pete:

No, love that movie. No. Movie. I'm taking

Aaron Brien:

love that movie.

Salisha Old Bull:

The book is good. Had good.

Aaron Brien:

Love it. His grandpa loved him, man. His grandpa loved him. Dude, he gets bitten by the snake.

Shandin Pete:

And

Salisha Old Bull:

everybody's grandpa.

Shandin Pete:

I was hoping movie didn't show up on our list. did. That's all right.

Salisha Old Bull:

That's just as bad as Indian in the Cupboard, right?

Aaron Brien:

No, no, let's. Let's not compare.

Shandin Pete:

Yeah, yeah, we're jumping. We're jumping arrows here. So there's a lot of progress made? Yeah. What are you talking about? No. Okay. Anyway.

Aaron Brien:

Let me let me let me I get it. I understand why you guys said that. Let me replace education. A little treat. All right. All right. Let me let me replace it because I'm a fan of the Western. Okay, love it. Missing the missing. The missing. What missing? I liked that movie. I've never I do like them. What is it?

Salisha Old Bull:

I never. I don't know if I seen it. I probably didn't.

Shandin Pete:

Is it? Is it a series

Aaron Brien:

or a movie? It's a movie. It's so it's a western movie?

Shandin Pete:

The mist? Good? Because it got patches.

Aaron Brien:

These patches are still in women. This other guy's trying to help them travel guy.

Shandin Pete:

Okay. All right. It's who's good. Who's the star? Oh, Tommy Lee Jones. Tommy.

Aaron Brien:

Tommy John.

Shandin Pete:

And he's an Apache. Or is he an Apache? Scouter. What is he? I don't know. I've never seen it. No. Honestly never seen the missing. You should

Aaron Brien:

you should watch it.

Shandin Pete:

I have to watch it. Okay, all right. Cool. I don't know

Aaron Brien:

my my last. My last one was just poor highway.

Shandin Pete:

That's good. Last one. Power. Hi.

Salisha Old Bull:

My name is legends.

Aaron Brien:

I don't I don't think that's a new movie.

Shandin Pete:

That's borderline borderline Indian movie. Yeah, I don't know. He

Aaron Brien:

just likes Tristan.

Shandin Pete:

Well, who didn't like

Salisha Old Bull:

to tend to that's the one and that guy.

Shandin Pete:

Yeah, one stab one stab. That isn't it's cool.

Aaron Brien:

It's good. Yeah, it's good. It's it to me. It falls under those like epics. It's an epic, which they kind of take on their own. Kind of their own thing. Yeah, it's It's good though. I mean, it's one of the best movies ever made. Right?

Shandin Pete:

It's a good one. Oh yeah. What's the girl's name? Who ruins who ruined everything who ruined the whole dude.

Aaron Brien:

She wrote through the whole family. Everybody everything nobody's talking about this? No one is she took them all out man. She

Shandin Pete:

did. That's the whole reason what's his name died and they had to go get his heart from Germany. I don't know what's

Aaron Brien:

crazy in that Lodge. 10 He's like got that weird cycle face. Note that reminds me Brad Pitt's doing this weird cycle bloody phase three of the scene on Tropic Thunder where Ben Stiller just got that Panda did bad

Shandin Pete:

Sorry.

Aaron Brien:

You gotta like log off of Academic Search Complete. You gotta get out of jail.

Shandin Pete:

Did I find that on Google Scholar?

Aaron Brien:

I don't know my Get Out of Jail. All right.

Shandin Pete:

Okay. Any any other ones on your list that you didn't mention? solutia No, I had one other one is more recent. It's not of this continent. And I don't know if we were supposed to do that. Oh, rabbit proof fence. No, not rabbit proof, but that's a good one. But yeah, hunt for the Wilder people. Do you remember? Did you ever see them the hunt? Yeah, well, they're people. That's a good one. Ricky Bobby. From our brothers and sisters down in. Maori brothers and sisters that yeah, that's a good movie, man.

Salisha Old Bull:

Yeah, then you gotta go on well, writer. Yeah, well, right is a

Aaron Brien:

good one. Yeah, we're in a whole different deal though.

Shandin Pete:

I know. Yeah. That's kind of region. Okay, because for one

Aaron Brien:

population alone allows for the Maori people to be represented more accurately in cinema where they're from? Well, they might just be the one what's the one one they can disagree? They can disagree they're gigantic group of people on their own island like that gives them we're not gonna say

Shandin Pete:

gives us an agency

Aaron Brien:

one remember the Marines and it's kind of a rough movie when

Shandin Pete:

they were once warriors that that one there were warriors. They were once warriors. Yeah, that's a good one

Aaron Brien:

too. Yeah, that's a good film. And I think we're kind of missing some here. We're we're missing some focus here rounded out.

Shandin Pete:

What? I didn't say nothing. Or they said look at

Salisha Old Bull:

okay, yeah. Oh, we're missing some.

Shandin Pete:

Seems like there's some good ones. I

Salisha Old Bull:

Yeah. What about Jeremiah Johnson?

Aaron Brien:

What movie?

Shandin Pete:

You know, the one I always liked, but I only seen it when I was a kid. And I thought it was real cool. Was that wind walkers? But I think I tried to watch it as an adult and I couldn't watch it.

Aaron Brien:

There's something to be said for those for those series that coyote waits. skinwalkers you know, like those Adam beat beach kind of detective things Tony Hillerman yes, they're not bad. You know.

Salisha Old Bull:

Black Robe. Black, Black

Aaron Brien:

Rock, man. Suck. Movie suck, dude.

Salisha Old Bull:

There's one way to Graham Greene and I don't know what it's called. But it's about the last of the movie people

Aaron Brien:

now we're just getting desperate

Salisha Old Bull:

to know what was left Oh my gosh. The rest. I don't know why. The rest Natalie don't know. Oh, I know. I know a recent one that I really like. But it's really really really, really long. Dream keepers.

Shandin Pete:

I didn't like that. I liked it at first, like, Oh, this is cool. But then. Yeah, and

Salisha Old Bull:

the stories in it are cool. I like the story, isn't it?

Aaron Brien:

Yeah. What about what about? Um, well, I just seen it. Where did it go? Oh, shoot. Indian horse. Movie.

Salisha Old Bull:

Am gonna watch no sad movies. There's like a lot of ones I left out though. There's a lot of sad movies like about boarding schools.

Aaron Brien:

Yeah, I'm not a big fan of that either. I kind of liked the far out hard to believe are the Western I do. I'm a fan of westerns. I really am. So yeah. Do you remember into the West?

Shandin Pete:

That one sounds familiar, but I can't recall. No. Into the West. No into the West woman

Aaron Brien:

woman walks ahead.

Salisha Old Bull:

I think like I think when it comes to those kind of movies, I think they've gotten better at representation in the movies. But I think like they're too hard to watch. Some of them are too hard to watch. They're too real. Oh, like The Revenant The Revenant that's, I can't watch. I watch movies like that. Like, I don't want to watch real about the real stuff. Yeah.

Aaron Brien:

I kind of agree with you.

Salisha Old Bull:

I want to say something that's gonna at least make me laugh. Yeah,

Aaron Brien:

what do you think about the Johnny Depp thing when he pretended to be an Indian?

Salisha Old Bull:

Was that the one that's like black and white and he's like floating in a boat somewhere?

Shandin Pete:

Tonto, tonto.

Salisha Old Bull:

Oh, that one. I don't really remember that one.

Shandin Pete:

You had a bird on his head. Oh, what about

Aaron Brien:

black clothed?

Salisha Old Bull:

Pirates of the Caribbean, but but with a bird on his head, right?

Shandin Pete:

Yeah, that's Tonto was same

Aaron Brien:

character almost. Yeah, the same manner. Yeah.

Salisha Old Bull:

Yeah. Boring. Gray. You say black cloud? Oh, that's not boxing movie. Huh?

Shandin Pete:

Great. I will.

Salisha Old Bull:

Black Cloud. Oh, black cloud

Aaron Brien:

seem like you haven't time keeping up here.

Shandin Pete:

You know, anyway, yeah. Okay. Well, what's I don't know. This is interesting, but I think maybe the listeners are gonna have a struggle. Because there's a lot of like, what do they call them? Loose references or references that they don't know what the heck we're talking about.

Aaron Brien:

Since when have we cared about that? I mean, seriously, when?

Shandin Pete:

I don't know. I'm just curious. I don't know how to I don't know how to remedy it. And maybe you don't have to don't don't know. But this thing we got here

Aaron Brien:

so listeners listeners if you if you're not, don't get references, just wait for the next one. What I believe I don't know.

Shandin Pete:

I'm gonna put a link to each of these shows if I can in the show notes. Because I think people should watch some of these. I think they should.

Aaron Brien:

I think you need to revisit dance me outside. I was pretty disappointed.

Shandin Pete:

All right. Well, I'll watch it. I'll give you a report.

Aaron Brien:

This guy wants to watch friggin Pocahontas.

Shandin Pete:

Squanto remember that one? That Disney classic.

Aaron Brien:

We bought neither Wolf Nor Dog. That was good.

Shandin Pete:

Neither Wolf Nor Dog. Hey, remember that one movie? The guy goes to the Arctic. In

Aaron Brien:

winter in the blood, man.

Shandin Pete:

Is that the movie? I'm thinking of what happens in winter in the blood? They don't remember.

Salisha Old Bull:

Didn't get to watch James Welch

Aaron Brien:

remember war cry?

Shandin Pete:

I don't Oh, do what? Uh oh.

Aaron Brien:

What about war party?

Shandin Pete:

A war party that's thinking of Yeah. Yeah, yeah, that's a good one.

Salisha Old Bull:

All I remember is there was a poster that hung up my Auntie's bedroom. Oh. That's all

Shandin Pete:

particular guy was on that poster. And so I was hanging in the bedroom. I can't remember this movie. The guy's in the Arctic, or the tundra. And he's studying wolves. And then there's a there's some hunter that keeps visiting and helping him but he's kind of a funny character. I don't remember that show. No, no, I can't remember what it's called. Anyway, anyway, this is dying. We're dying out. Yeah, we've done it done. I think we've done our job. We did our list. We should encourage people to watch some of these movies just because it represents some things that we think are either authentic in a manner outside of reality that sort of reflect our humor and vision outside of you know, the history that's not always accurately portrayed in a certain way but yeah, I think it's important in any closing words solution.

Salisha Old Bull:

And no, I just think that movies I think they're just like getting better and I think that's just like I just said before, like, there is a movie coming out I can't remember the name of it. And like kind of looking forward to seeing it. And I think I don't know I think it goes along with more like a mainstream Hill. And then it reflects history reflects our history and that's like a pretty important pretty important having to do with like oil and stuff like that, but like if it's not, I felt like if it's not Oh well done, it's really hard to, it's really hard to want to watch it. Something that reflects the history because I feel like we just spend a lot of time explaining ourselves all the time. Yeah. And we like those are just like an extension of that. It's like somebody's trying to steal, explain ourselves all the time. And, and most of the time when I make those, it's always only reflecting like one tribe. And there's so many different tribes. And, yeah, a lot of times, it's like a sad story. So I think my takeaway is like, I tend to lean toward the unreal plots, the unreal plot, something that's gonna make me laugh and something I'm going to probably watch repeatedly and make references to repeatedly and, and just something that's going to be bring joy, you know, I don't know, I think those are, the more memorable. I think that's why the list that we made was more memorable. Even if it is corny or inaccurate, it just seems to be go along with making my day. Like, I don't have to stop and cry in the middle of the day. Because I have watched this movie. Like, I just, I have something to reflect on to make me happy. So even if it's not real, like that's, yeah, that's what it is. I like it. And

Shandin Pete:

you can overlook sharpening an obsidian axe for the escapism of defeating a predator. Aaron, what you got, man?

Aaron Brien:

I agree a lot with St. Lucia. same sentiments where if I'm gonna watch Native people, I don't need to be reminded of where I live. Right? You know what I mean? Or like my upbringing, or I think there's probably a way to make a native film that reflects, at least our read, it'd be cool to like, watch a native film about just a group of kids and bikes in their adventures in a little town, you know? Right? Like, like, gathering money for an ice pop swimming in the ditch or right? You know what I mean? Like something real, like, but I don't need to see. I don't need to see movies, where they're putting cigarettes out on people's kids and shit. Like, I don't I don't need to be accurate, like, in that sense, or this functionalism? Or, Yeah, I kind of like the idea of a little bit of fantasy. A little bit of that. Almost just slightly off. You know, to me, like dances, that's me outside. It's not super accurate. It's accurate enough. It's still got its level of cheese. It's still got its exaggerated forms, but the way they filmed it, I like it a lot. And but it's it's distant to me, because that's over in Nova Scotia. Are Quebec and Nova Scotia. I think. So it's like, to me, it's like, okay, that's there. It's like, every time it's got to be just a little bit something off, you know? Yeah. Yeah. I like that song.

Shandin Pete:

Yeah, that's important. And I think that reflects the voice of, like, the indigenous viewer or the native viewer of film. But, you know, I think there's maybe a over over emphasis or attempt to make film for the non Indigenous viewer, when in fact, if you make it for the indigenous viewer, you're really making it for everybody, because I think we're all very similar in that way that we enjoy. laughter We enjoy escapism. I think we get into some trouble when we try to represent something in an inauthentic way. But you know, there's there's other purpose of serving too. Illustrate past that maybe people don't understand. But yeah, I don't know if that's I don't know movie is for that. I don't know if the cinema has always that's been always the purpose of cinema is to, in your face, make you cry make you feel bad about what you did or what you're going to do or what happened in the past. Because more about us? Yeah,

Aaron Brien:

I think that might be there might be cinema for the for the privilege. You know, I think growing up like, like reservation. Anyone who grew up like res cinema is an escape. Yeah, it's a step away from something that you're not living, you know?

Shandin Pete:

Yeah, yeah. So

Aaron Brien:

I think peace People who who come from privilege they like those kinds of movies. I'm not saying it's you can't like those movies. When you're a kid. I'm thinking of like when you're young and when you want to watch a movie, like, you're gonna watch something that's not real and not accurate. And it's kind of crazy. And it's kind of like, it's fun. Yeah. But what I'm waiting for in Indian country gets The Sandlot version of the native version of like sandlot what they captured in that film was like these kids playing baseball in the summer, just doing basic shit.

Shandin Pete:

Yeah. And I just stand by me.

Aaron Brien:

It's like, yeah, it's like, it's like, from the kids perspective. So one day though, there's going to be a native film that's like that. It's a group of kids. Reservation dogs. I think it's as close as we've gotten so far. But even that's a little bit like outlandish. It starts out with them still in a chip truck, which is like, okay, all right. Much, you know, but it's good. Reservation dogs is cool, man.

Shandin Pete:

Yeah. Yeah. Well, cool, man. Let's, let's wrap it up there. I think we went through a lot of things a lot of film that we enjoy. What Yeah, and I think you're right about that. We live a life that often people try to to capture and film but man, we don't want to watch that could just look out our window or reflect back on the past you know?

Salisha Old Bull:

Yeah. Or do some literally do some homework and after read a book, read it in the book

Shandin Pete:

read it. Yeah. Awesome, man. Well, this is a good one. This is good one that movie I was trying to think of. never cry wolf. Do you remember that? Never seen it. Oh, do

Aaron Brien:

different channels.

Shandin Pete:

never cry wolf. Anyway. 1983 it's way back. All right,

Aaron Brien:

the WG that was on WGN.

Unknown:

All right. Okay. All right.
